UCSD Summer offers a variety of programs for all age groups whether you are a parent looking for a non-credit camp for your children or an undergraduate student in need of a credit bearing program. Summer programs include a wide range of experiences including elementary through high school as well as university and beyond. You can utilize the Summer Program Finder tool to search for the right program for you.

    Advanced Materials Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

    The University of California San Diego MRSEC Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program provides full-time summer undergraduate research opportunities at the forefront of materials science and engineering. Participants in our highly collaborative and interdisciplinary program, which focuses on predictive assemblies and engineered living materials, will be fully immersed in the research laboratories of the MRSEC faculty from 5 departments across campus (Chemistry and Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, NanoEngineering, Physics), as they engage in projects with a focus in either or both experiment and theory.

    Afrisnet SURE Internship

    The Afrisnet Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program is a partnership between the non-profit Afrisnet (the African STEM network) and faculty and university leaders in Africa and in across the U.S. Through the SURE program, outstanding undergraduate and postbac African students gain research experience in laboratories at U.S. universities during the summer and additional career mentorship to prepare them to apply for graduate school, boosting the inclusion of young Africans in scientific research.

    AI Ready and Equitable Atlas for Diabetes Insights (AI-READI) Research Internship Program

    This internship program will be centered on developing skills and providing early exposure to AI, data science, and research, as well as the opportunity to gain exposure to faculty with expertise in AI and biomedical, clinical, and behavioral research. The program will include direct mentorship for a cohort of interns from AI-READI investigators/faculty mentors, as well as opportunities for career development.

    Californian Shaman, a Study of the Chemistry and Conservation of Native Californian Plants

    The California Shaman Outreach Program exposes high school students to ecology and botany, chemistry, and neurobiology throughout the course of the week. Students’ experiences include a hike and guided tour of the UC San Diego Scripps Natural Reserves with explanation and extraction of plants for further chemical analysis, hands-on laboratory experimentation at UC San Diego biochemistry laboratories, neurobiology experimentation and neurochemistry discovery, and a tour of Dr. Siegel's Organic Chemistry lab at the UC San Digeo Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

    Colors of the Brain - Kavli Institute for Brain & Mind Scholars Program

    Our goals are to motivate, mentor and facilitate the transition of undergraduate students at UC San Diego that come from disadvantaged economic and social backgrounds, as well as students with disabilities, into Ph.D. programs with significant relevance to neuroscience. The CoB-KIBM Scholars Program consists of a paid ($7,000 stipend to cover housing expenses and other needs, in-campus housing is not provided), full-time research position across 10 weeks within a UC San Diego or Salk laboratory, along with mentorship and support for navigating academic research for the remainder of their undergraduate education.

    Designing for Safety and Safety by Design

    The overarching goal of this CEER REU Summer Program is to immerse students in a meaningful and highly interdisciplinary research environment within the structural engineering domain and to teach them that design does not end with construction. Instead, designing for safety embodies: quantifying potential load conditions, damage mechanics, and uncertainties; monitoring for anomalies during operations; processing this information through cyber-modeling via digital surrogates; and translating the information to actionable knowledge for improving current and future system designs.

    Epigenetics for Anthropologists Summer Workshop

    The workshop will provide background information on epigenetic research questions of anthropological interest and hands-on experience with basic lab techniques for isolating DNA, amplifying specific gene regions, bisulfite conversion, and pyrosequencing to measure DNA methylation at certain regions of the genome. The workshop will also include a basic introduction to coding in R so students can visualize and analyze their findings. The workshop is free of charge, and requires no prerequisites. Students must be able to attend in person for the week-long workshop (8/18/25 - 8/22/25). We encourage students with underrepresented backgrounds in science to apply.     The PATHways to STEM through Enhanced Access and Mentorship (PATHS) Program’s mission is to increase the number, persistence, and success of underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and medicine.The PATHS Program is a four-year undergraduate scholarship and student support program that provides an annual scholarship, enhanced access to stratified mentorship, campus support, hands-on training, and academic preparation support. The programs’ all-access model for support, empowerment, and professional exposure will mobilize a new, diverse generation of STEM leaders by fostering STEM scholar identity development and early career identification through summer research programs as well as lab and internship placement.

    The Undergraduate Summer Research Award provides $7500 in funding for UC San Diego undergraduate students majoring in the physical sciences (chemistry & biochemistry, mathematics, physics, and astronomy & astrophysics) to conduct a summer research project under the guidance of a UC San Diego faculty member. The program immerses students full time in a research topic for 10 weeks.

    A summer program for incoming UC San Diego students with an interest in philosophy. The program will specifically help students adjust to upper-division courses in philosophy at UC San Diego. As part of the SPLASH program, students enroll in two philosophy summer courses (6 units total) specifically designed to help the transition into the philosophy minor or major at UC San Diego.
