Managed by the Division of Extended Studies, UC San Diego Academic Connections is committed to providing a pre-college summer experience that is academically and socially enriching to high-achieving, college-bound high school students motivated to explore the offerings of UC San Diego, a top-five, internationally ranked public institution. The program aims to help young people engage with the future by exposing them to some of the most exciting fields of research and study. Participants will work with committed and enthusiastic instructors to examine the world around them as inquisitive academic scholars.

Research

The Afrisnet Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program is a partnership between the non-profit Afrisnet (the African STEM network) and faculty and university leaders in Africa and across the U.S. Through the SURE program, outstanding undergraduate and postbac students gain research experience in laboratories at U.S. universities during the summer and additional career mentorship to prepare them to apply for graduate school.

Through a series of lectures and hands-on exercises, this workshop aims to ensure that computational scientists interested in free energy methods can learn the best practices in carrying out accurate, efficient and reliable free energy studies

Youth Camp

This is a high school Earth sciences program that provides a residential college life experience for participants.

Clarion is an intensive six-week summer program focused on fundamentals particular to the writing of science fiction and fantasy short stories. It is considered a premier proving and training ground for aspiring writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror.

Colors of the Brain is an organization promoting neuroscience education and research experiences to UC San Diego undergraduates. We are graduate students and postdocs who share a passion for improving research career outcomes for those who may not have had prior professional development support in the undergraduate journey.

Our goals are to motivate, mentor and facilitate the transition of undergraduate students at UC San Diego that come from disadvantaged economic and social backgrounds, as well as students with disabilities, into Ph.D. programs with significant relevance to neuroscience. The CoB-KIBM Scholars Program consists of a paid ($9,000 stipend to cover housing expenses and other needs, in-campus housing is not provided), full-time research position across 10 weeks within a UC San Diego or Salk laboratory, along with mentorship and support for navigating academic research for the remainder of their undergraduate education.

The overarching goal of this CEER REU Summer Program is to immerse students in a meaningful and highly interdisciplinary research environment within the structural engineering domain and to teach them that design does not end with construction. Instead, designing for safety embodies: quantifying potential load conditions, damage mechanics, and uncertainties; monitoring for anomalies during operations; processing this information through cyber-modeling via digital surrogates; and translating the information to actionable knowledge for improving current and future system designs.

FinDS is an innovative program that is designed to provide high school students with a strong base in the Mathematical Foundations of Data Science. The FinDS program is offered in two levels. For the beginners program, we do not expect a prior background in data science. A strong background in algebra and a willingness to work hard is all that is required to participate in the program. The program is appropriate for any student who has taken Algebra 2. Even college students seeking a solid background in the foundation of data science are welcome to apply. The FinDS Advanced program is suitable for those who have participated in FinDS Beginners or equivalent programs and will cover advanced topics in Algorithms and Machine Learning.

The International Summer Research Program (ISRP) is a rigorous summer program that invites students to join labs of leading UC San Diego faculty and engage in cutting-edge research. In addition to gaining valuable research experience, students will have the opportunity to explore San Diego and engage in cultural, academic and professional enrichment activities.

This will be the third annual "Intro to Epigenetics for Anthropology" lab skills workshop. This week-long workshop was first offered in the summer of 2024, as an outreach activity to enhance participation of underrepresented students in science to gain hands-on experience in epigenetic lab work in a lab setting at UCSD. The workshop is planned as a 3 year annual activity, and this summer will be the final year of the series. The workshop will provide background information on epigenetic research questions of anthropological interest, training in laboratory safety, and hands-on experience with basic lab techniques for isolating DNA, amplifying specific gene regions, bisulfite conversion, and pyrosequencing to measure DNA methylation at certain regions of the genome.

Youth Camp

The Knock Around Camps are built upon our belief that environment dictates a child's summer experience. Each summer we at Knock Around strive to create a low pressure, high energy, positive environment where children are encouraged to create friendships, explore creativity, and have the time of their lives.

Transition

UC San Diego students that place into Math 2 have the opportunity to prepare for the Place-Up Pathway (PUP) Exam. Passing the PUP Exam allows Math 2 placements to move into Math 3b.

The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) is an organized research unit of the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). Originally established as a Navy-orientated research laboratory in 1946, MPL has maintained a strong multidisciplinary research program consisting entirely of sponsored projects, with a large sponsorship from the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Science Foundation (NSF)

PATH (Preparing Accomplished Transfers to the [arts and] Humanities) is a collaborative initiative between the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of California San Diego and local community colleges, supporting transfer students and encouraging their success before, during and after studying at the university. Originally developed in 2016 with grant funds from the andrew W. Mellon Foundation to both UC San Diego and the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD), the program has evolved through three grant renewals and now also includes additional support from generous donors that have expanded the program offerings.

The PATHS Program is a four-year undergraduate student support program and graduate school preparation program that provides funding, enhanced access to stratified mentorship, campus support, hands-on training, and academic support.

The Physical Electronics Conference (PEC) is an annual scientific meeting for researchers to share fundamental research on the physics and chemistry of surfaces and interfaces, including metals, semiconductors, and biomaterials. The conference is a forum for experimental and theoretical work on topics like electronic properties of interfaces, surface growth, and energy transfer, and is known for its emphasis on the science underlying the materials used in electronics.

Workshops

The PPNT Boot Camp, a summer workshop-in-residence at IGCC, features lectures, discussions, and debates with distinguished researchers, academics, policy officials, and operational specialists from leading universities, the national laboratories, international organizations, and government agencies. Topics range from current nuclear threats, to international safeguards and nonproliferation strategies.

The University of California San Diego MRSEC Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program provides full-time summer undergraduate research opportunities at the forefront of materials science and engineering. Participants in our highly collaborative and interdisciplinary program, which focuses on predictive assemblies and engineered living materials, will be fully immersed in the research laboratories of the MRSEC faculty from 5 departments across campus (Chemistry and Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, NanoEngineering, Physics), as they engage in projects with a focus in either or both experiment and theory.

The Research Immersion in Material Science and Engineering program provides full-time summer students research opportunities at the forefront of materials science and engineering. Partnering with Biosphere 2 offers an exciting opportunity to expand this model into an immersive, field-based learning environment focused on environmental science, sustainability, and life sciences. Through this collaboration, students could engage in weeklong or multi-week residential programs at Biosphere 2, conducting real-world research in areas such as climate change, ecology, and water systems, bridging classroom learning with active scientific discovery. The Sally Ride Science Academy summer program offers science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) workshops for students entering K-12th grade. During these workshops, students assume the roles of space explorer, marine biologist, computer programmer and more as they immerse themselves in hands-on projects. Top-notch STEAM instructors lead these workshops, serving as both teachers and role models. These summer workshops also incorporate real-life stories of vibrant women conducting research in each field. Their examples inspire students and help make STEAM careers more accessible.

This program is geared to visiting medical students from other universities. It offers hands-on, immersive training in clinical applications of genetic technologies with an emphasis on ethics, equity, and empathy in precision health; building skills for interpretation and utilization of genetic test results in healthcare practice; and compassionate communication around genomic information with patients and families.

The program allows students to sign up and attend as many or as few of the sessions they would like throughout the summer. Get a jump start on your academic career at UC San Diego's 5-week, Summer Engineering Institute (SEI), and earn course credits. Receive support in making the transition from high school to the rigors of a university-level engineering curriculum, and build awareness of relevant campus programs and resources. SPLASH is a summer program for all incoming UC San Diego students with an interest in philosophy. The program helps students adjust to upper-division courses in philosophy at UC San Diego.

SPIS will give students college-level exposure to computer science, emphasizing problem-solving, communication skills, and mathematical modeling. Students will be exposed to project-based learning as well as research in computer science and engineering. In addition to academics, SPIS will introduce participants to the social, cultural, and broader intellectual experiences open to university students. Those accepted to the SPIS program will also receive career mentoring, and enjoy a series of lectures and demonstrations illustrating the exciting and varied career opportunities available in computer science and engineering.

The LTC Carnaval of New Latinx Musicals is a three-day national convening that will bring together theatre decision makers from around the country to see concert readings of 4 new Latiné musicals and participate in ancillary programming focused on Latinx Musical Theatre Artists. The course (in Spanish) offers an introduction to the U.S. tax system and the basic elements of the most important taxes that apply in this jurisdiction for foreign investors. The program offers a practical perspective on the main issues faced by companies seeking to establish a presence in the U.S., as well as the considerations that tax advisors must-have when structuring investments.

UB & UBMS enroll and serve low income first generation students at target high schools in San Diego, including: Lincoln, San Diego, Mission Bay, Clairemont, Hoover, Sweetwater, Chula Vista and Southwest. UB and UBMS prepare students for college enrollment and completion.

Join the UC San Diego coaching staff and the Triton Men's Basketball team as they host basketball camps on the campus of UC San Diego. We pride ourselves in providing a true college basketball experience where camps get a taste of what being a collegiate athlete is all about. UC San Diego Summer bridge is a year-long transition program that begins with a 5-week credit bearing experience during summer session 2, and continues throughout the academic year, ending in June of the following year.

The purpose of the RMTL Academy is to train students to conduct research in a biochemical science lab to prepare them to enter graduate programs in the health sciences and/or pursue careers in healthcare in order to address health disparities. Our program partners with Title I schools, which serve a high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The URH Summer Research Program (SRP) provides full-time stipend-supported mentored research experiences for UC San Diego undergraduates participating in one of the programs under the SRP umbrella. These include the McNair Program, UC Scholars Program, the Summer Undergraduate Research Scholarships Program, and others.
