Summer Success Programs for Transfer Students

Summer Session is committed to helping new UC San Diego students achieve academic excellence in their undergraduate education.

UC San Diego offers several Summer Success Programs to assist students in making the transition to UC San Diego's intensive quarter system.

Summer Academy in the Arts & Humanities

A 5-week residential program that provides academic transition designed for transfer students from San Diego Community College Districts (SDCCD) to UC San Diego. Students in this program are admitted to majors in Arts & Humanities. This program is intended to enhance the academic performance of SDCCD transfer students, as well as optimize their transition experience. The program offers immersive experience in residential life and credit-bearing courses.

5-week program: July 2 - August 5

Majors Humanities, Arts, and Institute of Arts & Humanities (IAH) programs
Housing On-campus housing optional
Courses

Students are enrolled in two courses (8-academic units)

Courses:

  • Course 1: DOC 100D - Promises and Contradictions in US Culture (4 units)
  • Course 2: HIUS 148/USP 103 - American Cities in the Twentieth Century (4 units)

Summer Transfer Academy

A 5-week program for incoming transfer students from a community college or a four-year college. Summer Transfer Academy consists of credit-bearing courses, on campus housing (optional), advising, and close interaction with faculty. The goal of the program is to build a strong academic foundation for incoming transfer students.

To be eligible for this program, students must be admitted to one of following departments as their majors: Biology, Computer Science, or Engineering and Mathematics.

Students enroll in one academy program (Bio or Math Academy) (8 academic units)  (or)

Mathematics Academy

  • Course 1: MATH 20E - Vector Calculus
  • Course 2: MATH 109 - Mathematical Reasoning

Biological Academy

  • Course 1: BICD 100 - Genetics (All students enroll in this course)
  Course 2 (Choose from one of the following): 
  • BIMM 101 Recombinant DNA Techniques Lab
  • BICD 101 Eukaryotic Genetics Lab 

Computer Science & Engineering Academy

  • Course 1: CSE 12 - Basic Data Structures and Object-Oriented Design
  • Course 2: CSE 15L - Software Tools and Techniques Laboratory

Summer Transfer Ahead Research Training Program (START)

The (START) Program is a 6-week introductory research experience at UC San Diego for incoming transfer students. START’s primary goal is to introduce participants to current biological research, and to provide training in useful laboratory tools as well as quantitative data analysis and modeling. It is designed to help transfer students in obtaining laboratory internships at UCSD, which are a key component of a successful undergraduate experience for Biology majors at UC San Diego.

Incoming transfers to UC San Diego; students who are members of underrepresented groups and students who will be the first in their family to graduate from college are particularly encouraged to apply

Dates

6-week program: June 26 - August 4

Will continue into the academic year with periodic meetings.

Majors

STEM majors interested in neuroscience research and planning to pursue graduate studies

Housing

Moderate stipend provided which can be used for housing

Courses

No course credit; students receive training via lectures, laboratory work, and workshops

Fees

No fees charged; students receive a stipend

UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center's Summer Science Transfer Program

Moores’ Summer Science Enrichment program is an 8-week summer internship for incoming transfer students. It teaches aspiring undergraduate scientists about cancer and how differences among people can create differences in cancer outcomes (disparities). Students gain a theoretical understanding of how cancer disparities develop and are sustained. Students are trained in bio-behavioral science labs where they learn about the scientific process through hands on participation and seminars.
