Triton Sophomore Scholars Program

Summer Session is committed to helping UC San Diego students achieve academic excellence in their undergraduate education.

Program Description

Triton Sophomore Scholars is a summer program designed to support rising sophomores achieve success as they pursue their four-year plan to degree at UC San Diego. During the 10 weeks of the program, scholars will experience a comprehensive approach to college life by focusing on one course per summer session, living on campus, and connecting with faculty, staff, students, and university resources.

Scholars will form a residential learning community to bolster their sense of belonging as Tritons and foster life-long friendships and connections. The learning community will include academic and social activities. Scholars will enroll in two 4-unit courses over two summer sessions that are critical to their degree progress. Scholars will receive individualized and structured academic support, including supplemental-to-instruction and tutoring, personalized learning assessments and goal setting, study skills instruction, contact with faculty and staff, and peer mentoring from experienced upper-division students. The Career Center will work with scholars to identify on-campus employment opportunities aligned with their individual educational and professional goals.

Tuition, campus-based fees, housing, and dining fees are covered by the program.

Fees Students are NOT required to submit the 2016-2017 FAFSA. Financial aid available to eligible students (Optional)

Application

When can I apply to the Triton Sophomore Scholars program?

Application opens May 1, 2017 and closes May 31, 2017. Space is limited, and applications will be considered during the open application timeline on a rolling basis.

 Where can I apply to the Triton Sophomore Scholars program?

You can apply online. The link to the application can be found near the bottom of this website (http://summer.ucsd.edu/success/sophomore.html).

Many of my peers received invitation emails to apply to the Triton Sophomore Scholars program, but I did not. Can I still apply?

Yes, all first-year undergraduates are eligible to apply to the program. The link to the application can be found near the bottom of this website (http://summer.ucsd.edu/success/sophomore.html). 

My friends did not receive invitation emails to apply to the Triton Sophomore Scholars program. Why did I receive an invitation email?

Invitations were sent to certain students based on many different criteria. However, all first-year undergraduates are eligible to apply. Invitations are not required as part of the application.

Costs and financial aid

How much is the cost of Triton Sophomore Scholars program and its housing?

Once you are accepted into the Triton Sophomore Scholars program, costs for course tuition and campus-based fees*, housing, and dining are paid for by the program. There may be additional fees and/or costs such as course materials and living expenses that are not covered by the program. *Campus-based fees (http://summer.ucsd.edu/tuition/tuition.html) include University Center Fee: $46.56/session, Recreation Facility Fee: $53.50/session, ICA Student Activity Fee: $67.04/session, and a one-time Document Fee: $80 (undergraduates only). 

Is my financial aid paying the tuition and campus-based fees, housing, and dining?

No, acceptance and participation in the Triton Sophomore Scholars program is not dependent on individual students’ financial aid status. Scholars may choose to request summer financial aid, but this will not be applied to the costs of the program and may reduce the total amount of financial aid available to the student. Scholars considering taking out summer financial aid are advised to consult with the UC San Diego Financial Aid and Scholarships Office: finaid@ucsd.edu or 858-534-4480.

Housing and dining

Where will we be living in the summer?

All Triton Sophomore Scholars will be housed in Eleanor Roosevelt College (ERC) for the duration of the program: July 2 to September 9.

How do I choose a roommate for the summer?

You will be housed in single rooms for the duration of the program.

What are the dining options in the summer?

All Triton Sophomore Scholars will receive the Blue Dining Plan, which provides $16.43 a day in dining dollars.

Course enrollment

Do I have to enroll in courses in both summer sessions?

Yes, as part of the Triton Sophomore Scholars program requirements, you need to enroll in a course for each summer session. We strongly encourage you to speak with your academic advisors on choosing these courses.

If I plan to apply for the Triton Sophomore Scholars Program, do I have to enroll in courses now before I am accepted to the program?

We strongly encourage you to speak with your academic advisors and enroll in Summer Sessions courses prior to being accepted into the Triton Sophomore Scholars program. If you are not accepted into the program, you can decide at that time if you would like to keep your courses or cancel enrollment without penalty before the official summers session drop/add date.
